Great news for Southampton Airport as it celebrates its busiest summer on record with close to 430,000 passengers travelling through the facilities over July and August. The new passenger levels have seen an increase of 14.6% compared to the same time last year.
August has been highlighted specifically as the busiest month on record with 219,757 passengers travelling through the airport doors, while July ran close with 207,631. Up until these past months, the busiest month was August 2007 when a recorded 205,000 passengers boarded planes from Southampton. Credit can be attributed to the 4 new airlines that the airport have welcomed this year, including KLM with worldwide flights via its hub in Amsterdam, bmi regional which launched a new service to Munich and Aer Lingus and launched direct flights to Cork. Southampton has also been recognised as the first airport in the UK to offer scheduled flights with European based airline, Volotea.
Flybe has also capitalised on the passenger growth at Southampton Airport as they have announced 5 new routes including Biarritz, Lyon, Toulon, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Munich, increasing the number of routes served by Flybe from Southampton to 34. Thomson has also made announcements that it will introduce an Ibiza flight for summer 2017 with some flight packages available.
Dave Lees, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, says ‘It has been a record summer here at Southampton Airport which is due to the amount of popular new flights and routes that we have secured this year. We hope to see this trend continue into 2017’.
