New direct air service between Southampton and Munich

bmi, who claim to be the UK’s most punctual airline, now offer a new direct route flying jets from Southampton to Munich twice a day. In celebration of the first flight arriving in Munich last week, local fire services organised a welcoming arch of water across the runway, while Dave Lees, the Managing Director of Southampton Airport, then opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate the arrival of the new route.

Mr Lees was quoted saying: “Scheduled air services to Munich have been requested by businesses in the local region as well as by holiday makers in Germany looking to start their cruises from Southampton.

"Munich is also the home of many major companies that have links with our region, including Airbus and BMW.

"We look forward to welcoming bmi to Southampton Airport for what promises to be a successful route”.

While Mr Schnadt, bmi’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “Since we announced the launch of this new route we’ve received excellent feedback from both corporate and leisure customers with a positive volume of early bookings.”

As Munich is one of Germany’s main financial hubs, the addition of this route is important because it is a vital destination to for business travellers, whilst for leisure visitors, Munich offers the famous Oktoberfest, the English Garden and spectacular Christmas markets. The city is also a gateway to skiing and hiking holidays in The Alps.

Also further progression between BMI and Lufthansa has been made meaning passengers travelling from Southampton can now connect to 200 more international destinations from the Bavarian capital. The new service offers 12 flights per week, operating twice daily Monday to Friday with one flight per day on Saturdays and Sundays.

This information is out of date. Please let me know if and when flights to Munich will resume. I have family living there and the route is very practical, both from a travel time perspective and ecomomically (from both ends). We use the railway to travel to the airport from Wareham. With children this is very easy. Our alterative currently is to use Heathrow or Gatwick which incurs a deal of organising and potential hassle. I look forward to your reply.

    • Hello Alan,

This was a press release form 2016, hence why the information is out of date. We aren’t affiliated with Southampton Airport, we are an independent guide so any information we repurpose comes from them. Might I suggest that you contact the official airport directly with your question 🙂
